NEW! UMC Youth Group

Old Traditions and New Beginnings

Even in the midst of a global pandemic and the forced separation from one another, exciting things have been happening in our church. First of all, we are so happy to be worshiping together in person again!  That's right!  For the past couple of months we have been enjoying being together in our sanctuary on Sunday mornings.  Of course we are careful to practice Covid safety protocols--wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, taking temperatures, and so on.  But we are TOGETHER!  And recently we have been given permission to sing (behind our masks) although we will have to wait a little longer to have our choir practicing and participating in services. But hopefully, SOON. Halleluiah!
Another exciting change:  As we have previously announced, Kernville United Methodist Church is now KERN RIVER United Methodist Church.  This is to reflect the uniting of two historic churches here in the Kern River Valley. This year, Highland Chapel and Kernville  will both celebrate their 150th birthdays,  a huge event under any circumstances. But it is made even more special by the fact that these two congregations have now become one, and will celebrate this milestone together.

We are still asking you all to send us photos and memories of your own time in both Highland Chapel and Kernville.  Were you married in one of these churches?  Were your kids baptized here?  Do you have photos you might share with us?  Church picnics, socials, vacation Bible school?  We would love to hear from you and publish as many of your memories as you care to share.  You can send us an email, post on our Facebook page, or send letters via the USPS.

ABOUT THE MUSIC

Music in our church is vital.  The Chancel Choir leads the congregation in the singing of hymns, and also offers choral music of the highest order. Our accompanist on both piano and organ is the immensely gifted Helen Smoot. Her talent lifts our Worship Services to a higher level of beauty and inspiration, both through her support of the choir and her solo preludes and postludes.

SERVICES

Our pastor, Rev. Jean Sidner, is a true inspiration as in her gentle way she shepherds our two congregations through the difficult process of merging into one. Her husband, Arthur Sidner, is gifted in both the technical aspects of recording  online worship services, and in lending his beautiful baritone voice to special music.
